MY FIRST FILM

A Strange Thing Happened At The Book Fair

Thursday, 19 April 2007

The last three days I have been working at the London Book Fair in Earls Court. I spent most of the time either giving directions to lost exhibitors or being ignored by literary agents. As if I was not even there, as they power walk to their next meeting. Though the people I was working were a good bunch and made me laugh a lot.

While I was standing on a spot (and a do mean a spot or pod as they were called) Andrew Lawden (an actor who has appeared in my earlier films and friend) bounded over to with a lady in tow. He had just dragged her round the whole of Earls Court, trying to find something or other. I can’t remember. He tells me that the lady and myself have something in common. I asked what. Andrew replied that she had made a film and I was making a film. And with that he bounded off to lunch, leaving the lady to talk to me.

The lady, who’s name I didn’t catch, commented on what a character Andrew was. I couldn’t help but agree. Andrew is definitely a character, but he is a mate. He does look out for myself. Always offering me free tickets to preview screenings, though they are usually for evenings that I am working and I find out about it a day or two before the event. Bless him. He does try.

The lady did stay to talk to me. She couldn’t offer me any advice about raising funds for the film, but she did talk about what to do after the film is finished. Once there is a product. She recommend getting a sales agent. To goto Cannes (seems there is a lot of fun to be had there, if you have a film) and other things, which I should of written done as they are fading fast.

I do remember that she told me her story. That she made a couple of feature films before having to give up to look after her kids. Though she does still receive royalties from her films, which isn’t bad. Now she is back and taking a new career path. She is now selling the rights to newly published books. I should of asked her for a card, but she had to go. She waved and then disappeared into the crowds of the book fair. Funny how you don’t think of things until it too late.

As I write this, I am preparing for a networking lunch in London tomorrow. They are a group of actors who work in promotions and use the money to put on plays and make films. I’m getting my business cards ready to hand out to everybody. Hopefully there will be someone who would be interested investing a small horror film.

Quick script update. I received the 2nd draft today from Ben. I will now sit down and read it.
