MY FIRST FILM

Back On Set

Tuesday, 12 June 2007

This month I will be going back on set. I haven’t been on a set for a while, but now I will be working on 2. I will be working as a camera operator on both, using my camera.

The first job is a scene from a comedy series. I believe that they are trying to sell it to a TV station. It’s a 100 to 1 shot that it will be picked up, but if it is I have been promised a job on it.  Which would be nice.

The other job is a day’s shoot on a feature film. Its for Stephen Southouse, the director who did the film in Cornwall. (See the Inspirations entry) They need some slow motion shots in a scene and because the camera I own can shoot at different speeds, they have hired me for the day. It’s not a hard shoot, but the money will come in handy.

The last time I was on set, or be more correct on location - I don’t get on sets much, it was a pop promo. A friend of mine, Clive Ashenden, was making his entry for the Robbie Williams Music Video Competition, last year. The track was called “The 80s”, and it had Ashvin-Kumar Joshi starring in it. We shot it at 3 o’clock in the morning in Limehouse, by the Rotherhide Tunnel. I went straight from my evening job, straight to the shoot. The video was a continuous hand-held shot, that we shot many times. I tell you I had a very sore shoulder at the end of that shoot. It was a joy to work on, but boy did my shoulder hurt for the next day.

Unfortunately the video didn’t win. I can’t remember who did. There were suppose to be 2 winners. One picked by viewer’s vote and the other chosen by Robbie Williams himself. The viewers choice went smoothly, but when it came to Robbie’s choice it seemed to be delayed and delayed. It got to the point that I lost interest in finding out and now I can’t tell you who won, I don’t care who won. All I know is that Clive’s film should of done better than it did.

I don’t do much work on other people’s film, as I am kinda of picky. There are a lot of people looking for cameraman with their own equipment, but the projects usually don’t interest me or they don’t want to pay. Some people don’t appreciate how much this equipment costs. Also it takes me away from doing my own films. I spend so much time developing and working on my projects, that I don’t have the time to go off and work on somebody’s else film. Though I will always work or help with a friend’s project. I like to give my friends a hand.
