MY FIRST FILM
Raps 4 Gaps
Saturday, 14 March 2009
I was at Cadogen Hall, in Sloane Square, yesterday, working as a camera operator for Sally Greaves. I was there to film ‘Raps 4 Gaps’. There was 12 groups from 12 schools from the borough of Chelsea and Kensington and all of them had written a rap. Each rap was about road safety, turning up on time at School, do your homework, bullying, etc. The kids had written the raps themselves, and they were there to perform them on stage in front of an audience.
My job was to get the reactions from the audience during the performance. I was one of four camera operators there, so I didn’t have to worry about capturing the performance on stage. That was well and truly covered. I had to follow Clare, I didn’t catch her last name, who would interview members of the audience. The whole event was being done like The X Factor, with a panel of judges giving their opinions on the kids’ performances. Of course they weren’t as savage as Simon Callow and all. All their comments were very positive, especially about the dancing. I would have to agree with them, the dancing was really good. Some of the kids could really break dance or whatever they call it now.
Originally my camera was going to be a live feed that’s projected on a big screen on the stage. My camera was going to be connected to the projector by a wireless transmitter, but unfortunately the transmitter got broken. There was an attempt to find a replacement transmitter, but there was no joy. For a while there it looked like I wasn’t going to do much, but the decision was made to do the reaction camera anyway and use the footage for the DVD.
Speaking of DVDs, I will have to ask Sally for a copy of the ‘Musicians of the Future’ concert I shot last year at Cadogen Hall. I am working with Sally again on the 1st April, so I will ask her then. I was the only camera operator there and had to set up and run all 5 cameras there. I would like to see how it all turned out.
